” People call me a feminist, but I am not a feminist.”
— No?
” I am absolutely no feminist. I see myself equal to a man, and that’s it.
I don’t believe I have to walk in line or going to protest, or whatever.”
— You just do it then?
” I do it.”
Today, a fantastically valuable human being has passed.
After giving birth to her daughter, in 1973, as an unwedded mother, by choice, she was by law forced to legally proceed in order to recognise her own daughter as a mother. “Unlawful children” had no direct birth rights (even to their own mother). Mothers had to proceed to legally prove and recognise their children, or go through “adoption” of their own children.
Also in inheritance, these children had no directs rights, as opposed to children of married mothers.
Paula Marckx found this to be unjust, and proceeded to drag the Belgian government to European court, and managed to change the entire legal framework for children of unwedded mothers, granting them the same rights as all other children.
Besides this, she had an amazing and inspiring life path. She was a model first, a journalist that has interviewed The Beatles amongst others, then she moved on to become the head of the World Trade Center of Brussels. She even obtained her license as an airplane pilot.
Farewell warrior ! And thank you for leaving something so valuable for us.
