Seeking the blessing of immortality

In ancient times many mystics and alchemists were feverishly on a quest to find the nectar of immortality. The fear of death drove them into an obsessive craze and whilst many of them have lost their sanity and sometimes even their lives, others have killed in order to obtain what they believed to be the map to the Holy Grail. Makes one wonder what men were really thinking to achieve by being immortal.

Nowadays people are not seeking the secrets to eternal life anymore. We actually live as if we have already achieved the ultimate blessing. How sweet of a lie.

In all of this, the funny thing is that we fail to accept the only and absolute truth there is to our life on Earth:

“Death is the only security in life.”

Quite some harsh words, at first, but let’s give it a try.

Now let us imagine that indeed our lives do end by death and that we cannot safely affirm that we will not die tomorrow. We can bet, for sure, but would we bet our lives on it?

And now if we imagine that this promise of death is not some obscure threat but rather a divine blessing, as it enables us to live everyday better and more intense. Maybe then we wouldn’t wait until it’s too late to show the true nature of our feelings. And maybe some of us wouldn’t live in constant despair, knowing the futility of that feeling. Our relationships with people would have a different dynamic, as we would spend time with people and actually enjoy the fact they are putting their precious and non-renewable time at stake in order to honor our time.

And now just imagine waking up in the morning knowing the delight of being blessed with another day? Wouldn’t it be as if you could taste the sunrise?

So if death is the only security we have, would we still be chasing after our illusions in order to escape death? Hiding death as if it was some kind of filthy happening, clouding our well-deserved joy of being alive?

Maybe death is just the celebration of a life lived. And how that life is lived, is maybe where the key to immortality is hidden.
